Facing federal desegregation legislation, integrating neighborhoods brought on by black displacement, and growing civil rights activity, white supremacists in Chattanooga react with increasing violence. The following is a list of bombings, arson and violence between 1957 and 1960:
Jan. 11, 1957—Bus bombing in Chickamauga
Jan. 23, 1957—Avondale home is bombed
Aug 2, 1957—Home of school desegregation case attorney R.H. Craig bombed
Nov. 4, 1957—Two separate bombs damage homes for black families displaced from Westside
Oct. 27 & 29, 1957—Two bombings in East Lake
Jan. 19, 1958—Howard High School bombed
Jan. 27, 1958—Integrated YWCA building bombed
Feb. 26, 1960—Black home bombed
July 15, 1960—Ft. Cheatham, a black community near Dodds Ave., is bombed. Three buildings damaged.
Aug. 3, 1960—Bombing near Dodds Ave.
Aug. 5, 1960—Two white youths using shotgun shoot black man and woman in Alton Park
Aug 11, 1960—East Lake bombing damages two homes
Aug. 13, 1960—Avondale home bombed
Aug. 17, 1960—White realtor’s home bombed, FBI called in to investigate
Aug. 21, 1960—St. Elmo bombing of duplex injures four black children, Reward offered for information
Aug. 22, 1960—Two white men put black man in hospital, severely beaten
